Oh Geez, I started the weekend by doing the Masters 30+ at Monsters and had a lot of fun watching our team mates carve thru the pack and got in about 40 left turns at a pretty fast pace. But then, Sunday is Funday. The conditions combined to be just about perfect. A light rain the night before to make the trail a little tacky. 55 degrees and mostly cloudy. A great course with an uphill start. Team mates equipped with a Bonebell. What more could you ask for a MTB XC race?

Well, Greg Heck and I got dispatched in the same wave with Mike S in the next wave 3 minutes behind. Everyone was gunning it up the first hill, but Greg and I started mostly in the last row and managed to get pretty close to the front before it broke off into the singletrack. Then the single track traffic slowed us down, and let the leaders off the front to cut up the wave in front of us. The paced limped along for awhile. I paced behind someone else in my age group for a lap. Pushing him for a while until Greg came up and passed us both. Well Heck, he was stirring it up. Let’s go. Got on Greg’s wheel and pushed him forward for most of the last lap. We almost caught the kid in front of us more than a couple of times, but not quite enough go to get him at the line. My favorite sum it up lyric from this race was “Get pedaling you whippersnappers. The geezers are coming!” because the first wave of riders to start is the 20-29 year olds, who should be faster than the 30-39’ers. But we always run over most of the kids. Older can be better. Right Mike?

Then I was looking back across the clearing, and it was Mike Sequin blazing his way thru the crowd. Mike must have had a machete, cowcatcher, or something in order to get thru as much traffic as he had between the start and us. Powerhouse.

At the Monsters crit I was duly impressed with the skills of the road squad. At the mountain bike race, they made me feel like a regular Dirtbag. At the end of the race what is really great, is to see your teammates do well, support each other, and have a blast. Hats off to XXX !

Also, mega thanks to the whole WORS crew for putting on another great event. I would say that every WORS race that I have been to has been an A++ professional event. They know exactly what they are doing.
