Women’s Camp
Women's Development Program Training Camp
We launched our annual Women’s Camp in 2010 specifically to offer our teammates in the Women's Development Program an approachable opportunity to bond, develop skills, and gain confidence on the bike. Since then, our annual Women’s Camp has become a full-fledged tradition in its own right, offering participants a chance to get away from Chicago, go on longer rides, and bond with their teammates.
xXx Racing’s Women’s Camp is a supported 3-day camp, and in 2021 it will once again be held in nearby southwest Michigan (Lakeside, Michigan), a 75-mile drive from downtown Chicago). Camp fees include lodging only; participants will carpool or drive themselves. The camp is coached by long-time team member and team coach, Randy Warren, who is a certified USA Cycling Level 1 *D Coach, the highest level of coaching certification offered by USA Cyling.
2021 xXx Racing-Athletico Women’s Camp
October 1-3, 2021
Lakeside, MI
COVID-19: We continue to exercise due caution regarding COVID-19 at all xXx Racing-Athletico activities. For Women’s Camp we will be requiring a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the start of camp. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend camp. We will understand and refund your registration fees.
Lakeside, Michigan is just a short, ~75 mile, drive from Chicago. It is, however, in some ways, a world (and a time zone) away! Yes, Michigan does operate in the Eastern Time Zone but that means that the sun won’t go down until around 7:30pm on October 1st! That will give us more time for our Friday afternoon/evening ride. Home to the famous Apple Cider Century each fall, there are an abundance of low-traffic, relatively flat opportunities to ride (maybe occasionally hilly, by Chicago standards). We will also get to enjoy the “other” side of Lake Michigan.
The focus of this camp is camaraderie and team building, while improving our cycling skills and enjoying the beautiful, rural countryside that is Southwestern Michigan. We will have a skills clinic, practice group riding, have a variety of ride options for our long day of riding and even enjoy a home-cooked meal at Randy’s parent’s home in nearby Niles, MI (Randy grew up just 35 minutes east of Lakeside)!
We work hard to keep the costs of Women’s Camp as low as possible. This year, we are charging $180 for this camp. We do not however, want cost to be a barrier to attendance, so please let us know if it is for you and we will see what we can do to include you in this camp experience. Rough Schedule, more detailed schedule to follow:
Friday, October 1
Arrive in the afternoon/evening
Brief discussion on riding in a group including drafting, hand signals, verbal signals, single and double pacelines
We will go on a ~2 hour ride on Friday
Saturday, October 2
On the bike Skills Clinic
Basic Bicycle Maintenance and Adjustments Clinic
Long ride day w/3 distance options. All rides will start out together
Carpool to 41 Grand Ave, Niles, Michigan (about a 30-minute drive) for homemade Lasagna dinner (homemade pie for dessert) at Jim and Arlene Warren’s home (where Randy grew up). We will be eating outside.
Sunday, October 3
We will go on a final ~2 hour ride before packing up and heading back to Chicago
